What is In Home Care?
In–Home Care (IHC) is a flexible form of child care designed to accommodate the needs of families unable to access mainstream child care.
In Home Care places are targeted to families who:
- have no access to existing child care services; or
- their circumstances mean that an existing child care service cannot meet their needs;
and at least one of the following criteria also applies:
- the child's guardian (or guardian's partner) has an illness or disability that affects their ability to care for the child;
- the child lives in a rural or remote area;
- the work hours of the child's guardian (or guardian's partner) are hours when no other approved child care service is available; or
- the child's guardian (or guardian's partner) is caring for three or more children who have not yet started school.
How is it Managed?
Carers approved with the Communities@Work Family Day Care and In Home Care Scheme are self-employed, operating their own businesses from home. The Scheme supports carers in setting up their business, offers ongoing support and advice and in-service training. The Scheme has five playgroups every week, a toy library and a loan arrangement for equipment.
