Child Care and Education Centres — Maintaining Quality

Maintaining Quality

Communities@Work strives for and maintains the highest standards. We want to offer the best services for the community. We have systems in place covering three broad areas to ensure your child is receiving quality care.

1. Licensing
Child Care Centres are subject to State child care legislation and must be licensed to operate and receive Commonwealth funding. The license specifies:

  • numbers of children in care
  • sizes of rooms and playgrounds
  • staff qualifications and ratios of staff to children
  • health and safety requirements.

The Office for Children, Youth and Family Support administers the licensing role in the ACT. For more information, visit http://www.dhcs.act.gov.au/ocyfs/.

2. Staff Qualifications
What makes a child care centre different from others and creates a sense of individuality is definitely its staff.

The quality of staff is a centres main asset. Communities@Work gives high priority to employing people who are suitably qualified and experienced, have appropriate security checks and have a real desire to care for your children.

It is a Territory licensing requirement that a proportion of staff must hold formal qualifications while other staff are employed on the basis of relevant experience in child care and children’s developmental needs.

3. Accreditation
Our child care centres are all appropriately registered and participate in the Quality Improvement and Accreditation System (QIAS) that ensures centres meet stringent quality assessments.

Areas covered by QIAS include relationships between staff, children and families as well as the centre’s activities and health and safety practices. Visit www.ncac.gov.au for more information.
