Family Support

What we do

The Family Support Program provides support by using a variety of approaches including:

  • Case work
  • Information and advice
  • Advocacy and referrals to other agencies
  • Emotional and practical support

The amount and type of support provided is dependent on the needs of the family.  The Program has the flexibility to work intensively with families, if required.

The support provided is in partnership with the family and is goal-orientated.  A support plan is developed with the family to identify goals they wish to achieve.

Who we work with

Families in the Tuggeranong and Weston Creek communities, experiencing:

  • family crisis situations
  • relationship difficulties
  • financial hardship
  • domestic violence
  • housing difficulties
  • lifestyle difficulties
  • problems with communication and conflict

How do I access the program?

If you'd like to access our Program, you can either contact us directly - or someone else can do it for you.  This may be your doctor, a neighbour or friend, or anyone who is concerned and you agree for them to contact us.

How much does it cost?

We are an ACT Government funded service.  To ensure that families within Tuggeranong & Weston Creek have access to support services, there is no fee for our support services.

Other programs Communities@Work offers to individuals and families

SuperGrands

What are SuperGrands?   The SuperGrands Program is a free mentoring service for families to help strengthen living skills.  Mature, trained volunteers are carefully matched with families to offer one-on-one home mentoring and/or group coaching in areas like budgeting, meal planning, establishing routines and basic home maintenance.

SuperGrands can assist you with a range of challenges .......

  • How do I make a budget work?
  • Why is my home always in chaos?
  • What is something easy, healthy and affordable that the kids will actually eat?
  • How do I get my kids into a routine?
  • How can I keep up with odd jobs round the home?

SuperGrands is not about "doing it for you today" but giving you the skills to "do it for tomorrow".  It's about sharing skills between generations and is ideal for young parents or families without an extended family nearby.  SuperGrands is all about stenghening skills that families want to develop.

The program involves your family, the SuperGrands Coordinator and the SuperGrands team - all working together.

You can refer your own family or ask a support person to do so.  The SuperGrands Coordinator will make a time to meet with you and talk about what you would like from the program.  They will then try and match your family with the skills of a SuperGrand volunteer.  You will be introduced to your Super Grand and together you will set up a plan about the things you are going to do together.  Your Super Grand can work with you for about 9 months and will probably visit for a couple of hours once a week or fortnight.
