Support for Families Experiencing Hardship

We know these are tough times and we want you to know that we are here for you. It’s times like these that we all need to support each other and reach out for support when we need a hand. We might not have all the answers, but we promise to listen and support you as best we can. We have a range of services to support families in need. Please speak to the manager of your service or centre or call us at 6293 6500 if you are struggling or need support.

The government also has a range of financial and other support available, and we encourage you to review these.

Click here for Services Australia’s information about financial and support options for families, including the ACCS, which we have provided more detail on below. Sometimes, it can take time for your application to be approved, so it’s a good idea to begin the process as soon as possible.

Additional Child Care Subsidy (ACCS) Temporary Financial Hardship

Child Care Subsidy (CCS) and Additional Child Care Subsidy (ACCS) has restarted from 13 July 2020.

Under the ACCS, you may receive up to additional child care subsidy towards your child care fees, for up to 100 hours of care per fortnight, if:

  • You are experiencing financial hardship and you need help paying your child care fees.
  • Your income has been reduced because you have lost your job, you are caring for a seriously ill family member or have recently lost a family member you may be eligible.

You can apply online via myGov, or in person by visiting your local Centrelink office. To support your application, it is helpful if you have evidence documentation that details the following:

  • The event or incident that has caused your financial hardship, e.g. lost job, substantially reduced income, family illness, natural disaster etc;
  • How this event has affected your family’s ability to pay your child care fees.

Out of School Hours Care (Before and After School Care)

Communities@Work delivers high quality, engaging, inclusive and fun before and after school care to over 2.500 children through our 15 Out of School Hours Care services.

At Communities@Work before and after school care, children are encouraged to meet and make new friends and be active learners by trying new activities, including sports, incursions, excursions, music, cooking, gardening, construction play, drama, and arts and crafts.

Our families frequently tell us:

Some of the activities in our before school care and after school care services have included Book Week, Wellbeing Activities such as dance lessons, mindfulness classes, and confidence-building sessions, and Community Links such as participating in events like Red Nose Day and World Environment Day in the past.

Child Care Centres

As the largest provider of children’s services in Canberra and the ACT region, Communities@Work provides the highest quality care from birth to preschool age for over 1,300 children through our child care centres. Our early childhood education and care centres focus on creating a supportive and caring family and community environment, underpinned with a strong educational foundation that fosters well-being and a love of learning for your child.

Our qualified and experienced early childhood educators across our 12 child care centres in Canberra and the ACT region create environments where your children feel safe to explore, grow and develop and learn through play. We offer a variety of educational activities and experiences for your children each day, including art and craft, sport and science.

Communities@Work’s educators are dedicated to leading practice and learning in early childhood education and care, and children at our centres experience a wide variety of activities such as Families Week events, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander events, and activities that connect to the local community and support our social programs to distribute food, gifts and toys to families in need. If you choose a Communities@Work child care centre, your child will learn from a broad range of experiences, including excursions, incursions, and positive community engagement, which form an integral part of our curriculum.

Family Day Care and In-Home Services

Communities@Work Family Day Care and In-Home Care services deliver high quality small group education and care, provided in educator’s own homes and tailored to individual family’s needs.

Communities@Work supports over 85 family day care educators who are self-employed professionals, committed to children’s education, and to their own professional learning. Our coordination unit supports our Family Day Care educators, dedicated to leading practice and learning in early childhood education and care. Our educators have been praised for their passion, interest, and connection to the children by the families accessing our services.

Our family day care educators provides a flexible home learning environment, with qualified and passionate early childhood educators delivering a natural approach to play and discovery. Our family day care educators plan different and unique experiences for the children every day, such as art and craft, sport, science, and programs such as music therapy to support children to regulate their emotions.

Communities@Work Family Day Care is a two-time National Family Day Care Service of the Year Award winner (2015 and 2016). Our family day care service has also achieved a rating of Exceeding Quality Standard under the National Quality Framework. School Holiday Programs

Communities@Work School Holiday Programs offer a huge selection of fun and engaging activities across Canberra each school holidays, such as excursions to the movies, Questacon, inflatable obstacle courses, Big Splash, battle games and much more. Some of our popular incursions include interactive magic shows, creative gardening, sports events, and scavenger hunts, hatching chicks, etc. Our qualified educators collaborate with children to ensure play, leisure and recreational activities are both safe and meaningful.
