A Christmas CANstruction

Staff from Communities@Work got #DoGood creative at the Gungahlin Marketplace this weekend to CANstruct a Christmas Tree from donations of non-perishable food items. This Christmas CANstruction comprised of nearly 1,000 cans generously donated by Woolworths.

Woolworths, Marketplace Gungahlin and Communities@Work

As part of their Christmas Appeal, Communities@Work is asking shoppers to purchase just one extra item at the supermarket to donate to Communities@Work.

“Something as simple as a few extra cans of food can bring joy, dignity and hope to Canberrans experiencing hardship this Christmas,” said the CEO of Communities@Work, Lorcan Murphy.

“Many families experience extreme financial pressure around the holiday season. With donations from the Canberra community, we are able to provide hampers full of food for the Christmas period to help ease that pressure. Savings on food and other essential items means that families can still make Christmas a special time.”

‘The generous support received from Jeremy Keeffe, Operations Manager at Woolworths and the rest of the wonderful Woolworths team, is invaluable to us during this time.”

However, although the demand is particular high over the holiday period, it is not only at Christmas time that we need donations of non-perishable food items. You can make this a habit in your weekly shop and donate to us all year round.  Click here for drop off points.

Our community pantries operate in Tuggeranong and Gungahlin and are accessed on average over 2,500 times a month by Canberrans who are struggling to meet the demands of everyday life. Communities@Work heavily relies on the generosity of the Canberra community to ensure our pantries are stocked with nutritious food all throughout the year.

Also, a big thank you goes to Maria Smith at the Marketplace Gungahlin for providing us the space for the CANstruction.

The CANstruction will be on display outside Woolworths in the Marketplace Gungahlin until 10 December 2016.
