Why we need your help
Approximately 40,000 Canberrans live below the poverty line, including 9,000 children. Many single and double-income households are now at risk of homelessness because of the rising cost of living.
One in three Canberrans lining up for food relief has never needed help before.
Help us support these people by ensuring our food pantries keep up with this increased demand. Our pantries are only funded through cash donations, major fundraising events such as our Christmas Appeal and the MarchMingle, and income-generating activities.
“The plight of the working poor is unprecedented in Canberra. Our pantries and other community services are supporting people who never thought they’d need help.”
Michelle Colefax, Communities at Work CEO.

MarchMingle – A Fun Day Out for a Great Cause!
MarchMingle is an exciting new 7 km fundraising walk to bring the community together and raise money for our community food pantries. We’re aiming to raise $110,000 to help Canberra families who are hurting with the increased cost of housing, utilities, and groceries – people who never thought they’d need help. So, get your runners on and let’s walk together for a great cause!
Canberra cost of living crisis
Working poor: Around 2,000 Canberrans are homeless and more than 3,000 are waiting for public housing. Approximately 40,000 Canberrans live below the poverty line, including 9,000 children.
Many more families live in insecure housing, where a medical emergency or sudden loss of income could put them on the street. They may not be eligible for government support because they “earn too much”. They are the working poor.
