Meet the Educator: Adla
I've had many great moments over the years but there are a few that have stood out to me. One that I'll always remember is when a child came to me with a huge picture that she had drawn of my house..
Adla is one of our amazing Family Day Care Educators who has been with us for over 25 years.
“I’ve had many great moments over the years but there are a few that have stood out to me. One that I’ll always remember is when a child came to me with a huge picture that she had drawn of my house. She said, ‘This is Adla’s house, this is the happy house.’ And it just made me cry. I thought ‘Wow, I’m having an impact here.’
“I used to take care of a young boy James in 1991. I hadn’t seen him since then and then one day, years later, I get a knock on the door and here is James with his Mother and a big bunch of flowers. They came to see me to invite me to his wedding. And now his children are in my care today.
“Two months ago, I was taking care of a little girl but then she moved to Perth. Her Mother contacted me and said that they were coming over for a wedding on the coast and they wanted to see me. I thought maybe they were coming to Canberra to visit family but I found out they flew to Canberra after the wedding for just 4 hours to see me before flying back to Perth.
“People might think that my job is just feeding children, putting them to bed and changing their nappy but no, it’s challenging and rewarding. Every single day you learn something about you. Every single day the children appreciate what you do and the parents do too. So I’m happy. As long as I stay healthy, I will keep doing this job.”
