Conversations that Count with Infusion

Would you like to learn more about your community? Or maybe you just want to have a chat and develop new connections? 

Through this initiative, our vision is to work alongside of the Canberra community to foster community connections, identify local assets and skills, and to support you to develop your community ideas. 

This initiative is led by our Community Development Program, is an ACT Government funded initiative, and aims to: 

  • Capture community feedback and ideas.
  • Provide information on local services, programs and activities. 
  • Work with community to identify local assets and skills. 
  • Assist communities to identify their goals and map out actions to achieve them.
  • Build greater community connections within individual suburbs, and between neighbouring suburbs. 
  • Assist in the building of individual connections and networks.

In 2022, we launched a series of workshops, events and activities aimed at supporting the community’s wellness, wellbeing and connection-to-nature journeys. Residents of Tuggeranong, Molonglo Valley and Denman prospect enjoyed activities such as Nature Weaving, Guided Wellbeing Nature Walks, Basket Weaving, Harp Yoga, Watercolour, Floral Fun and gardening workshops.

Commencing in late 2022, the Community Development program launched a pilot project called A Growing Community with the aim of providing low-income households with an opportunity to learn how to grow their own food. The pilot project was a success and has been partly incorporated into the Growing Healthy Communities project for 2024. Please click here for more information.

Growing Healthy Communities

Tuggeranong_Community_Council_Youth_Forum_communities_at_work_02Since 2017, the Tuggeranong Community Council (TCC), in conjunction with Communities at Work, have been hosting an annual Youth Forum to provide space for young people residing within the Tuggeranong region to come together to discuss key topics of concern to young people. Schools and Colleges with the Tuggeranong region are invited to send representatives The TCC Youth Engagement Sub-Committee utilise the TCC Annual Youth Survey results to drive the development of key topics for discussion at the forum, participate in the event delivery, and assist in the analysis of the results. The Community Development team are a key partner in the planning, facilitation and delivery of the event and post event report writing.

The TCC utilise feedback gathered at the forum to inform approaches to submissions and present feedback to Government on the areas of interest and concern to young people within the region. The Executive Summary of the Youth Forum Report is circulated to relevant ACT Government Directorates and participating organisations. 

south_fest_communities_at_workSouthFest is an annual community event designed to showcase and celebrate the diversity of businesses, organisations, and community spaces within the Tuggeranong Valley. The Community Development program have participated in the development and delivery of Communities at Work activities at this event since its inception in 2018. The program has also participated as a member of the organising committee, working closely with the Tuggeranong Community Council, event organisers and stakeholders to deliver this event. As part of this event, the program has facilitated activities such as, Loose Parts Play, Friendship Café, Infusion, and a Graffiti Art project.

1000_Hearts_Crafting_Project_communities_at_work1000 Hearts is a global kindness project.  Community members hand sew small felt hearts which are then shared with others as a gesture of hope and kindness to those in times of need.

The uniquely crafted hearts are currently being shared through some Communities at Work programs and external agencies who are keen to share these hearts through their activities.  If you would like to learn more about this project or to make some hearts of your own, please contact:  communitydevelopment@commsatwork.org

The Community Development Program has established two exciting initiatives that promote a love for reading: The Book Exchange and the Resource Library at the Denman Village Community Centre.

Book Exchange

The Book Exchange is located in Denman Village Community Centre’s reception area. It’s available during opening hours and to those who hire the centre. The exchange has a variety of books available, kindly donated by community, for community. 

As it is a book exchange, we encourage those that take a book to also donate a book. Please ensure any books you place in the exchange are appropriate for community members of all ages.

free_english_conversation_group_canberra_communities_at_work_denman_prospect

The purpose of this group is to provide an opportunity for people to practice and build confidence speaking English as well as to develop and strengthen social networks and connection within the community.

A weekly theme is chosen by the participants and an informal discussion and activities are designed around this topic. The group is held every Thursday during school terms 10am-12pm. There is no cost to participate, and tea and coffee is provided.
