Growing Healthy Communities
The Growing Healthy Communities project is aimed at improving community access to activities that have a primary focus on increasing wellbeing outcomes, through raising awareness of the importance of healthy eating, being physically active, and living socially connected lives. The project is funded by ACT Health through the Healthy Canberra Grant: Reconnection within Priority Populations.
Activities will provide increased opportunities for social connection with other community members through walking groups, community gardens, and volunteering. Project activities will be delivered through a range of information sessions and workshops focused on food growing, reducing food waste, nutrition, making healthy food choices. Project activities will provide education and practical skill development on growing your own food at home, growing food from seed, seed harvesting, propagation; composting, and reducing food waste; preparation of nutritious meals on a budget, eating seasonally, and cooking skills
Project Objectives
- Activities will have a primary focus on increasing wellbeing outcomes through raising awareness of the importance of healthy eating, being physically active, and living socially connected lives.
- Participants on low incomes will learn new skills and gain knowledge on how to grow food at home to increase their access to fresh home grown nutrient rich food as an avenue to reduce food insecurity.
- Participants will build knowledge on local food systems through connections with local community gardens, project volunteers, and community members.
