Pause and Play

Swap screens, schedules and to-do lists for a morning of fresh air, adventure and family connection.

Join us for a relaxed morning at the beautiful Fetherston Gardens, where children can explore, create and play in nature while parents and caregivers take a moment to slow down and reconnect.

Nature play expert and founder of Tiny Teach, Tessa Wood, will guide children through hands-on outdoor activities designed to spark curiosity, confidence and imagination. At the same time, adults can enjoy gentle nature-based mindfulness activities led by Communities at Work’s nature connection facilitator, Sally Holliday.

Whether your family loves spending time outdoors or you’re simply looking for a reason to get outside and try something new, this welcoming event is designed for everyone.

We’ll finish with a shared light morning tea and a family nature scavenger hunt, and each family will take home their own nature finds kit to continue the adventure.

In 2022, the Community Development program launched its ‘A Window into Wellness’ initiative, which is aimed at supporting self-care and wellbeing. Through activities such as nature weaving, art, nature journaling, and harp yoga workshops, the community has had the opportunity to try new experiences and to create time for themselves.

The team are eager to run more wellbeing activities as part of this initiative, so we would love to hear from you if you have any ideas.

Since 2017, the Community Development program has worked alongside of the Tuggeranong Community Council (TCC) to develop and facilitate an annual Youth Forum and post event report.

Each year Schools and Colleges within the Tuggeranong region are invited to send representatives to participate in the forum, which is held during school hours. The event is an opportunity for students, to come together with their peers to engage in discussion and share their thoughts on topics that matter to them.

The TCC Youth Engagement Sub-Committee utilise the TCC Annual Youth Survey results to drive the development of forum topics. Members also participate on the day and assist with analysis of the results.

The TCC utilise feedback gathered at the forum to inform approaches to submissions and present feedback to Government on the areas of interest and concern to young people within the region. The Executive Summary of the Youth Forum Report is circulated to relevant ACT Government Directorates and participating organisations.

SouthFest is an annual community event designed to showcase and celebrate the diversity of businesses, organisations, and community spaces within the Tuggeranong Valley. The Community Development program have participated in the development and delivery of Communities at Work activities at this event since its inception in 2018. The program has also participated as a member of the organising committee, working closely with the Tuggeranong Community Council, event organisers, and stakeholders to deliver this event.

Our activities at this annual event have included Graffiti Art Projects, Friendship Café, Felting Workshops, Pollinator Workshops, Children’s play activities, and Creating Christmas Craft activities.

This initiative was launched in 2024 as part of the programs A Window into Wellness initiative. It is designed to bring community together to foster:

  • Nature connection.
  • Community connections.
  • Creativity & knowledge
  • Time for self-care
  • A sense of wellbeing

Each month, registered participants come together with the facilitator, to notice nature, capture what brings them joy in their nature journals, have a cuppa and a chat.

The Nature Journal Circle is FREE and is held monthly (Fridays) at various locations within the ACT, 10:00am – 12:30pm.

The purpose of this group is to provide an opportunity for people to practice and build confidence speaking English as well as to develop and strengthen social networks and connection within the community.

A weekly theme is chosen by the participants and an informal discussion and activities are designed around this topic. The group is held every Tuesday during school terms 10am-12pm at Communities at Work, 5 Felstead Vista Denman Prospect.

There is no cost to participate, and tea and coffee is provided.
